As the crypto crew, we host workshops and talks, that are based off actual cryptoparties, with a particular focus on demystifying some of the technical understandings of encryption and anonymity online, through hands on workshops and conversations about visibility.
No skills necessary, though bringing a computer is generally helpful! More info on upcoming events here.

The first event was held on October 24, 2014, at the foot of Elsysian Park. We learned and traded tools for online anonymity.

The second event was a trailer talk near the Kenneth Hahn Park in Los Angeles on December 12, 2014. Following a tour of the adjacent Inglewood Oil Field, our guest speaker Chris Csikszentmihalyi gave a talk on corporate and government accountability.

The third event was held at Crash Space in Culver City on March 8, 2015. Six stations were held by different professors who hosted office hours, offering a range of things to learn: radio frequency hacking, navigating the dark web, keyrings, toy hacking, and private virtual realities.

The fourth event was held on May 29, 2015 at Machine Project as part of its first installment of Data Smuggler's 101.We re-performed the initial communications of Edward Snowden and Laura Poitras, and hosted a role-playing workshop in which we learned how to anonymously establish contact with a source, verify the security of an encrypted message, and send and receive encrypted information. Our whistleblowers had to send encrypted messages from the STAT-US trailer, parked outside Machine Project to the reporters inside the newsroom.

Our fifth workshop was held on April 30, 2016 at Machine Project. Nadia Bettendorf turned the part of the store front into a magnetic nail art studio where she gave people magnetic explants on their nails. Meanwhile, Aram Barthel led a KILL YOUR PHONE workshop, in which we learned how to make signal blocking pouches for our electronic prosthesis.
